The forgotten ones (Fribourg)

Here one more forgotten hikes post. This time in canton Fribourg!

Gastlosen, Fribourg, Switzerland

  • Start pointBärghaus Gastlösen, 1550m
  • Destination: Loop to the start
  • Highest point: Wolfs Ort, 1915m
  • Distance: ~11 km loop
  • Elevation gain: ~610 m
  • Time: ~3h
  • Difficulty: Moderate

This hike starts and finishes at Bärghaus Gastlösen (1550m). Just on the language border Jaun is the only german-speaking Gruyère commune. It features a very cool waterfall visible from the village. Short after the village you'll find the parking where you can take the chairlift up to the Berghaus. From there the aim of the hike is to go around the Gastlösen ridge. First going to Chalet du Soldat then up to Wolfs Ort pass (highest point of the hike at 1915m) and then continuing around on the other side back to the starting point.  The hike is about 10km and with a few ups and downs it totals around 600m in elevation and can be done in about 3h.

Dent de Lys (2014m), Fribourg, Switzerland

  • Start pointLes Paccots, ~1200m
  • Destination: Dent de Lys, 2014m
  • Distance: ~5.3 km (one way)
  • Elevation gain: ~810 m
  • Time: 4-5h
  • Difficulty: Challenging

To reach Dent de Lys you continue beyond Les Paccots and you will find several places to leave the car. From there I don't remember much. But mostly it was a hike through the forest along Route de la Dent de Lys for the first half and on grassy pastures for the second half. What I do remember well is the last part. You arrive at Col de Lys and cut right to rech the summit. After a few minutes the grassy slope becomes a rocky climb. You don't really need equipment but it is a bit vertiginous because you are really close to the cliff on the other side. It was scary enough that we went in 6 but only reached the summit in 3. The descent is actually easier because you look away from the cliff. It is also a rather long hike because it start around 1200m and end just above 2000 so it gives you more then 800m elevation which will take 2h if you are fit.

Kaiseregg (2072m), Fribourg, Switzerland
  • Start pointRiggisalp, ~1470m
  • Destination: Keiseregg, 2072m
  • Distance: ~5 km (one way)
  • Elevation gain: ~750 m
  • Time: ~4h
  • Difficulty: Moderate

This hike might win the prise as oldest hike of my blog. I think I went in spring 2014 so 11 years ago. The starting point is Schwatzsee (the one in canton Fribourg just about on the language line). From there you take the chairlif to Riggisalp at 1470m. You start going slightly downhill on large roads linking the Alpages. There is a fork where you can choose a more direct route straight ahead of a more gentle one passing via the Hürlisboden hut. I did the direct one both ways but a good option would also be to go up straight but come back down via the hut. N.B.: Via the hut also adds 50m elevation. The direct way cuts across the flank of the mountain to Selzmatt, 1630m. Here you almost U-turn and climn across the ridge. At some point the ridge becomes too steep so the path continues around it to Keisereggpass 2072m. Here you almost U turn again to tackle the final stretch to the peak, 2185m. From up there you'll deinitely get good views, including the Schwarzsee lake down below.

La Berra (1719m), Fribourg, Switzerland
  • Start pointLa Roche, ~1050m
  • Destination: La Berra, 1719m
  • Distance: ~4-5 km (one way)
  • Elevation gain: ~680m
  • Time: 3-4h
  • Difficulty: Easy to moderate
We did this hike as a snowshoe hike but I think it is algo nice in summer. I remember little about it but I do remember it goes mostly through the forest and without particular difficulties. The starting point is the base of the lifts in La Roche, 1050m, and the arrival is the La Berra peak at 1719m. Just 10 min before the peak, at 1640m sits the La Berra hut which will be happy to serve you hot tea or chocolate and cake along the way.
