This is a short but adventurous family hike starting just above Les Marécottes, near Martigny. Park about 100 meters before the entrance to the Gorges du Triège—do not continue by car, as the road becomes extremely narrow beyond that point.

A quick walk brings you to the entrance of the gorges. Along the way, you’ll catch panoramic views of a nearby village perched impressively on the shoulder of the valley. At the entrance, a charming chalet welcomes you to the trail. Access is free—simply open the gate and begin.

The path through the gorge is a fun adventure. Wooden and metal staircases wind their way through the canyon, which is open enough to let sunlight play off the flowing water. You’ll cross multiple bridges, climb a spiral staircase, and squeeze through narrow rock passages built right against the cliff walls. Some parts can feel a bit vertiginous but never unsafe. Our 4-year-old managed the entire trail on her own!

The total elevation gain is around 60 meters, and it takes about 20 minutes to reach the top of the gorge, including time for pictures. The highest point is at 1100 meters.

At the end of the gorge, a small tunnel leads to a trail descending to an unexpected feature—a tiny train station! This is part of the Mont Blanc Express, connecting Martigny to Chamonix. After a few minutes, you’ll reach a fork with a sign clearly marking the descent. (The uphill path appears to be an older, longer loop.)

The descent is steep but short. After about 15 minutes, you reach a train barrier. Press the button to open a cute little gate, then cross the track. The station itself is delightfully small and perched in a spectacular location. Descend the stairs to the village and walk through it to return to your car.

The entire loop takes around 45 minutes, or up to an hour with young children.

What to Do Next?

As it is short do you still have energy? Just nearby, in Les Marécottes, you’ll find:

  • A mountain zoo showcasing alpine animals

  • A natural rock pool, a unique and scenic spot—even if it’s too cold for a swim, it’s a great place to relax and unwind after your mini adventure
